FAQ

How many theaters would I need in order to get my money back?

It depends on how long you plan to run your theatrical release.

You only need one theater if your film will be shown for less than 2 weeks.

Two theaters are required if your film will be shown for more than two weeks.

What percentage of the box office goes to marketing budgets?

Marketing budgets typically account for between 20% and 40% of a film’s budget. This is because marketing is very important to the success of any film.

Without effective marketing, no one will be able to find out about your film. People won't pay for it if they don’t know about it.

Why isn't there more crowdfunding sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter for filmmakers?

Crowdfunding is a great way to connect with potential investors.

But most filmmakers don't think they're qualified to ask for money. They feel they need someone else who can vouch for them.

Since they haven’t proved themselves yet, they don’t think anyone should make an investment in them.

Instead, they spend months focusing on their project and hoping that someone will notice.

Then they realize that they didn't properly prepare for the launch of their campaign.

So instead of getting thousands of dollars, they end up with just a handful of donations.

Why are so few independent films ever distributed?

Most indie filmmakers assume that their films will get picked up by distributors.

Because they love the work, distributors will likely buy their films.

However, this is seldom the case. Distributors often take advantage of independent filmmakers.

They employ tactics like delaying a movie's release until after awards season has ended.

They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

They don't wish to lose those profits.

How To

How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. You will also receive a bronze plaque engraved with your name. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.

The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.

You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.

How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?

Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. A star can be renominated after 10 years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs approximately 250-300 pounds, which equates to 4 tons of stars.
