How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.
If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.
After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.
To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.
